What is 1-Propanol?

Propan-1-ol is a primary alcohol with the condensed structural formula CH3CH2CH2OH. It is one of the two isomers of propanol with 2-Propanol. It is often used as an organic solvent (e.g. in pharmacology) and is formed naturally, in very small amounts, during many fermentation processes.

What is 1-Propanol used for?

1-Propanol is often used as a solvent, for example in the production of paint. It can also be found in detergents and disinfectants (has a bactericidal, tuberculocidal, fungicidal and limited virucidal effect). It serves as a raw material for the production of insecticides, herbicides and medicines. Due to its anti-knock resistance (octane number 118 according to RON) it is also suitable as a fuel in petrol engines (Not legal). However, the volumetric energy density is about 24MJ/l, about 28% lower than that of gasoline (33MJ/l)

In some applications it replaces the toxic methanol.
