Copper (II) nitrate is used to obtain pure copper (II) oxide, copper-containing catalysts, as a fungicide and mordant for dyeing fabrics.
In combination with acetic anhydride, it is used in organic synthesis as a reagent for the nitration of aromatic compounds (the so-called Mencke conditions).
Copper (II) nitrate is a moderately toxic substance - LD50 for rats orally 950 mg / kg (trihydrate).
Causes irritation on contact with skin and mucous membranes, on contact with eyes - severe irritation with risk of corneal opacity.
Dangerous for the environment - LC50 for fish 0.29 mg / l for 96 hours.
