What is Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate?

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is a colorless and odorless potassium salt of phosphoric acid. It is composed of a potassium cation (K+) and a dihydrogen phosphate anion (H2PO4−). It is one of the potassium phosphates.

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate forms an acidic solution in water: pH 4.4 in a 5% solution. Anhydrous potassium dihydrogen phosphate is hygroscopic.

What is potassium dihydrogen phosphate used for?

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is mainly used in biochemistry and in the natural sciences in the production of buffer solutions.

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is used in food technology as an acidity regulator. It is approved in the EU as a food additive under number E 340 (potassium phosphate) for food additives together with the secondary dipotassium phosphate (K2HPO4) and the tertiary potassium phosphate (K3PO4). Phosphoric acid and its salts are known to cause hyperactivity, allergic reactions and osteoporosis. There is an initial dose per day of 70 milligrams per kilogram of body weight for the total amount of phosphoric acid and the amount of phosphate.

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is also used as a fertilizer.

In nonlinear optics, potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal plates used at different angles are used to double the frequency. Halving the frequency is also possible using parametric fluorescence. For the experiments to develop the laser counted inertial fusion in the national ignition system, several potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals with a mass of 318 kg per crystal were grown.
