What is Benzyl Benzoate?
Benzyl benzoate is the ester of benzoic acid and benzyl alcohol with the formula C6H5COOCH2C6H5.
At room temperature it is a colorless liquid with a faint aromatic odor. At about 17 degrees benzyl benzoate crystallizes to a solid. It occurs in a number of blossoms (e.g. tuberose, hyacinth) and is a component of Balsam of Peru and Tolu balm
What is benzyl benzoate used for?
Gels and emulsions containing benzyl benzoate find medical use in the treatment of scabies, of which they kill the mite. Although this benzyl benzoate is BP quality (British Pharmacopoeia), we do not recommend using this product for medical applications yourself and it is not allowed unless you have a permit.
Benzyl benzoate is also used as a carrier for dyes and as a solvent in industry and laboratory. It can also be used as a fixative in perfumery.
Benzyl benzoate is used in industry as a plasticizer for plastics.
