What is Xylene?

Xylene or dimethylbenzene is a group of aromatic hydrocarbons methylated from benzene. It is represented by three structural isomers: 1,2-dimethylbenzene, 1,3-dimethylbenzene, and 1,4-dimethylbenzene (referred to as ortho-dimethylbenzene, meta-dimethylbenzene, and para-dimethylbenzene, respectively). Technical xylene is a mixture of three isomers, with a composition similar to meta- (60%), ortho- (10-25%) and para- (10-25%).

Xylene is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor and extremely flammable. It is naturally present in petroleum and coal tar and is formed during wildfires. The chemical properties differ little from one isomer to another. The melting point is between -47.87°C (m-Xylene) and 13.26°C (p-Xylene). The boiling point is close to 140 °C for all isomers. The specific gravity is 0.87 (the compound is lighter than water). The odor of xylene becomes detectable for concentrations on the order of 0.08 to 3.7 ppm, and the taste is evident in water for concentrations on the order of 0.53 to 1.8 ppm.

What is Xylene used for?

Xylene is used as a solvent, especially as a cerumenolytic. It is also used by the printing, rubber and leather industries. It is used as a starting reagent for the production of terephthalic acid, used as a monomer for the production of terephthalate polymers. Xylene is also used for cleaning, as a pesticide, also used in parasitology in the KOHN method to check the proper drying of saddle spots, as a thinner for paints, but also in varnishes and inks. It is present in small amounts in jet fuels and gasoline. In the presence of oxidizing reagents, such as potassium permanganate KMnO4, the methyl group can be oxidized to form a carboxylic acid.
