What is Magnesium Sulphate?

Magnesium sulfate MgSO4 is one of the two magnesium salts of sulfuric acid in addition to magnesium hydrogen sulfate Mg(HSO4) 2. The magnesium sulfate heptahydrate MgSO4 7 H2O, which also occurs as a mineral epsomite, was given the bitter name Epsom Salt because of its bitter taste.

What is Magnesium Sulphate used for?

fertilizer

Magnesium sulfate is used as a magnesium source for plants in fertilizers. Pure Epsom salt is used, among other things, in fruit cultivation, but mainly to prevent the needles of coniferous trees from turning brown. Magnesium sulfate contributes to an acidic soil environment, which conifers typically prefer. An input of 50 g/m² is common in spring or late autumn. For large trees, up to 200 g / m² is applied.

-Desiccant

Due to its hygroscopic character, it is used in organic chemistry to dry substances. To do this, add as much anhydrous magnesium sulfate as possible to the liquid to be dried until the newly added magnesium sulfate remains fine-grained in the liquid and no longer clumps. Subsequently, the magnesium sulfate can be filtered off.

-Medical application

It has long been used as a laxative in medicine. The plant anatomy Nehemiah Grew first extracted the epsom salt, which he identified in 1697 as magnesium sulfate, from mineral water.
In obstetrics, MgSO4 is used as the treatment of choice for the therapy and prophylaxis of eclampsia-related seizures.
Magnesium sulphate is used in so-called instant hot packs to generate (therapeutic) heat up to 40 °C
Magnesium sulfate is also used in medicine for bile flow tests (see choleretic).
Magnesium sulfate is administered intravenously to treat torsades de pointes tachycardia (off-label use).
Magnesium sulfate is used in the treatment of acute asthma attack and also in acute heart attack.

-Other use

MgSO4 is used in floating systems to produce a highly saturated brine for a body to rest on without submerging.
Magnesium sulfate solution is used as an electrolyte replacement or regeneration solution for lead-acid batteries.
As part of artificial table salts, e.g. B. Pan salt, to save sodium chloride.
